Summer is finally here, a warm, quiet, and reflective time of year. The park has received several rain showers this winter and spring, although our rain totals are nothing to brag about. The annual fall color was pretty spectacular, and the season itself was a big success, with thousands of visitors each week seeking to get outside and explore the canyons, hillsides, meadows, and trails. Now that summer is here, there are many flowers, butterflies, birds, and few visitors. Consider coming out to the park again!
Note: The park is open, and guided hikes, star parties, and other events are being held. Please see the park website for more details on these upcoming park events.
The 2024 spring bird migration for this area is mostly over. Many colorful birds passed through the Sabinal Canyon and Park this season. Make plans for March, April, and May of 2025. The Park's Birding hosts will return in March! The birding blind is being renovated. Look for more information soon.
This spring, we will host the semi-annual Lost Maples Butterfly Survey on May 7. The event generally runs from 10 a.m. to about 2 p.m. No experience is necessary, and folks of all walking abilities are welcome. A hat, hiking shoes, water, and a snack or lunch are all recommended. Contact Laurel Rhodes, Kerrville Master Naturalist, at laurelinfl@icloud.com to register or for additional information.
